At Unity, we believe the world is a better place with more creators in it, and true change happens when all voices are heard. In October 2021, we hosted the inaugural Unity for Humanity event to realize this philosophy. Our goals were to celebrate and connect social impact creators who were harnessing real-time 3D technology to power real-world change, foster a more defined community by sharing conversations and stories, inspire more creators to consider social impact content, and launch Unity Social Impact.

In the midst of a global pandemic, a massive recession, civil unrest, and the end of “normal” as we know it — combined with an upcoming IPO — Unity decided to create and launch Unity Social Impact. The following is a hazy account of what went down, including my mistakes, and where we knocked it out of the park.
It All Started on a Flight
I recently had an article published on Dice Insights in which I talked about the unique opportunity to equip the future creators of the world. I really wanted to write this article as I talk with so many parents and teachers who are either trying to completely keep tech out of their kids’ lives or are focusing too much on the “consumption side” of tech. This post summarizes my hope — that all kids are exposed to the creative potential of technology so they may prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.
The American philosopher, Eric Hoffer, said: “In times of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.” In a world where Eighty-five percent of the jobs in 2030 haven’t been invented yet, this couldn’t be truer.
The traditional education model is no longer sufficient for adapting and thriving as a professional, nor is it even a requirement anymore. …
